Alfa Romeo Scighera
An Iconic Concept
The Alfa Romeo Scighera was introduced in 1997 at the Turin Motor show. The name, Scighera, comes from the Milanese colloquialism for fog. It was made in tribute to Alfa Romeo's success in motor sport.
The car was designed by the Italian design house Ital design. The concept car was based on the Alfa Romeo 164 and was a fully functioning road car. It was fitted with a 3 litre V6 that was midmounted, it produced 400 bhp and had permanent 4-wheel drive.
The bonnet of the car flows sumptously from the Alfa Romeo grille at the front, it has an integrated rear spoiler and exaggerated lines derived from Formula One cars. The unique head-lights are referred to as "Clowns-Eyes" by Fabrizio Giugiaro.
Weight was kept down to 1450 kg due the construction of the chassis using aluminum and carbon fiber. The car was pencilled in for mass production, but it never went ahead due to alleged costing issues.
The side windows of the Italdesign Scighera were opened electronically like wings upwards, while the other doors open as normal ones. You could convert your coupe in a cabrio if you were to take out the windows.
The car was a cult classic and even featured in the computer game Need for Speed III.
