Over 200,000 cars have been sold under the scrappage scheme since it began.

Buyers have ten weeks left to trade in their old car for a £2,000 discount.

The Department for Business Innovation and Skills posted the latest amount of new car orders on 14th September, at 205,112 up to September 6.

This brings the average weekly amount of cars scrapped under the scheme to 10,134, or 1,448 per day.

If the rate of sales continues, the scrappage scheme will end on November 23rd, three months earlier than the February 28 end date.

The government has rejected an extension of the scheme, according to the RMI National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA).

The scrappage scheme began on May 18, 2009 and runs until February 28, 2010 - or until 300,000 new vehicles have been bought under the scheme.
